The Peace of the Closed Door

Someone I cared very much about passed away about a month and a half ago. His death was unexpected and jarring for all who knew him, including me. A fervent and sensitive soul, he had lived fully and loved God and others right up until the moment of his passing. As a clairaudient and clairvoyant Christian mystic (it sounds like an oxymoron, but I promise you it’s not), I had been energetically connected to him since I was 12 years old and I sensed his suffering from a distance. For years, I had prayed for him, wept for him, and, in the last year of his life, sent him messages of comfort, including a long letter of empathy and insight about his pain.

The total cessation of that channel was, in every sense, a shock to me.

Some might ask, why do you not become a medium? You have such exceptional psychic abilities, and if you engage in mediumship, you can still talk to him now that he’s died, they would say.

I don’t want to do that, and here’s why.

First, the obvious: the conflict with my faith

Though intuition and prophetic vision are spiritual gifts that are described in detail throughout the Pentateuch, Psalms, Prophets, and the New Testament (especially Paul, who explicitly affirms visions and messages from God, granted they align with Scripture and come true in real life), mediumship is marked as a severe sin. Christians are warned to stay away from those who attempt to communicate with the dead.

I am not just “following the rules” when I say that I do not want to become a medium. I believe that God has instituted a barrier between this world and the next. Just as no one knows the date of the Lord’s second coming except the Father, and “no one has ever seen God,” (John 1:18) there is a chasm fixed between the living and the dead.

And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.

Luke 16:26

What this says is that even those who try to cross between the living and the dead (such as mediums) are not able to truly do so, and God intentionally keeps knowledge of the dead secret, so that it can be revealed only in his timing, as he has dominion over that world. If I were to try to talk to him, what I would receive would be false and deceptive; the reality is that he is resting and safe, and simply waiting for his loved ones to rejoin him. This traces back to the angels who were stationed at the Garden of Eden after Adam and Eve disobeyed God, to keep it from being entered until the end of history. Those angels are still stationed at the gateway between here and there.

And so, I recognize a profound difference between psychic/energetic work with the living, including advanced forms like telepathy and astral projection, which could all be categorized under prophecy and direct locution, and attempting to speak to the dead, which is mediumship – and this is not possible, nor is it allowed.

A deeper reason: the feeling of peace

As I said before, I am not just following a religious rule, nor am I secretly desperate to speak with my deceased friend. There is a distinct closure that I feel when I think about the energetic channel being closed.

This particular individual’s life had been very “loud”. This is not just because he was exuberant and had many acquaintances, or because he expressed his emotions freely. He had experienced a great deal of cruelty from others, and for all his life, he had felt deep longings for friendship and unconditional care. He had never married and had had only a few real friends who did not use him or manipulate him. At the same time, he had a profoundly gifted mind and wrote poetry and literature with a nearly unmatched Victorian Gothic depth. He held onto specific archetypes of moral purity, which acted as muses and guiding lights for him even in the darkest and most confusing times of his life.

When I think of him now, I feel… peace. I feel quietness. For the first time in his existence, he is no longer suffering. He does not need to speak to me, for he has no unfinished business. He is resting completely in the comfort of God, where he no longer has to mask his intelligence or fear being taken advantage of. To be honest, he has a much better quality of life now than he ever did when he was alive, as much as it pains me to not be able to interact with him anymore.

He passed on July 11 of this year. 7/11 is a numerologically significant date: 7 is the number of divine completion, and the number 11 is thought to resemble the open gates of heaven. He entered his heavenly rest at the exact time when his spiritual book was complete.

For this reason, I do not feel like his death was untimely, even though none of us predicted it. He died the very day before he was about to re-enter a deeply stressful environment after a period of rest. God allowed him to fall asleep in safety, perhaps knowing that he could not bear one more hour. And he never has to bear another hour ever again. ๐Ÿค
